Keeping Yourself Motivated While Attempting Weight Loss

02.16.10

How can you stay positive about weight loss? So often we have private conversations with ourselves. These conversations we have in our own minds could be called our “Self Talk”. This is a tool that is quite strong. By repeating the same thoughts over and over, the mind actually comes to believe they’re true. We all have the tendency to be influenced by our inner beliefs. So many times a statement repeated in the mind can become self-fulfilling. If your self-talk each day is that you have no chance of actually losing weight, you’ll become convinced you can’t change yourself. Simply put, you can talk yourself into doing something such as losing weight or talk yourself out of it.

So what is your self-talk about? There is a quiet voice within your mind that you should listen to. Are you being positive about it and eager to move forward toward your goals? Or is it destructive and undermining your weight-control efforts? Remember, even negative self-talk can be changed by positive thinking.

There are simple ways to alter the way that your inner voice works so that it helps you to control your weight.

Some illustrations of a poor internal dialogue are:

* I’m just a completely hopeless failure. I have not dropped a single pound for more than seven days. “I think being fat is just in my genes” I have to go to the gym.

Examples of positive Self Talk are:

* I may not have lost weight, but I did exercise and plan my meals. If I keep making these small changes, I’ll read my goals. My healthy habits will lead to weight loss.

“Plenty of people watch what they eat these days” My body deserves the healthiest choices possible and there are others that agree with me.

* Fun comes in many forms other than eating. My body requires food to work, but that’s it.

Positive self-talk is such a powerful tool when it comes to enhancing your own self-image, as well as removing whatever blocks are keeping you from your weight loss goals. Until you master positive self talk, you should keep a journal of what you tell yourself. Seeing in on paper will allow you more objectivity about yourself and the efforts you’re making to lose weight. You can also use a diary to record a mental inventory of your successes at the end of each day. What did you do well? Focus on the more positive aspects of your day, don’t zero in on the negative and just think about how you can make the next day even better. Be sure to pat yourself on the back for each and every success you have, no matter how small it seems. Keep in mind that you will be able to lose weight better by thinking you are able to do it. Know that it’s a natural thing for many people to have some doubt about reaching goals. You can build positive belief through positive thinking and you will doubt yourself less often. By believing in yourself, your goals are within reach.
