Quite possibly the biggest single reason for people beginning a weight loss program is so that they are happier with their appearance and nothing looks worse than belly fat. It is great to want to look more attractive but the big benefits will come from improved health and outlook on life that follows.

If you can reduce belly fat not only will you feel better but you will be far less likely to succumb to disease. Put very bluntly obesity is a major health issue and is one of the killers of modern society. Definitions of obesity are not precise or universally agreed, how-ever if a man has greater than 25 percent body fat and a woman 32 percent they may be considered obese. Many more of our residents are fitting in to this category. More recent studies have shown that as many as 20% of people in richer countries could be called obese.

Without a reduction in belly fat there is a much greater chance of developing heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Combined these three factors may be to blame for death levels of 75% in all countries with a highly obese population.

With high levels of body fat your body has to work harder on a daily basis just to survive and handle the extra stress placed on your body. Being severely over weight is often tied in with high cholesterol and lack of physical capacity. The heart is then overworked trying to pump blood through narrow arteries. This compounds into issues of adequate supplies of blood being available to our brain, and heart muscles. Blood pressure then rises which can lead to heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure.

Medical trials and research is uncovering more and more evidence that belly fat is responsible for, or is related to, many forms of cancer such as cancer of the breast and uterine in women, and of the colon and prostrate in men. It is thought that fat may actually store cancer causing chemicals.

It is very important that a level of stability is kept between carbohydrate and fat intake as it has a major influence on the production of insulin in our bodies. Excess carbohydrate is stored as fat if it is not immediately required. Combine this with an over consumption of fat itself and the body gets out of balance and starts to produce more and more insulin, which would normally regulate blood sugar levels, and the body can then no longer cope, leading to diabetes. Diabetes can lead to amputation of limbs, blindness, stroke, sexual problems, kidney failure, stroke, heart disease and not uncommonly, death.

The good news is that a moderate regular exercise program, combined with a reduction in belly fat, and a sensible lifestyle, can reduce some of these risks, and may even stop the process. A reduction in belly fat will give many people an improvement in health both in the short and long term. Susceptibility to heart issues, cancer risk, and some types of diabetes will all diminish as belly fat is reduced.
